Thanks France! Since 1886 this gift became a symbol of freedom, justice and democracy. Lady Liberty is holding a torch pointing skyward with one hand and in the other she holds a tablet inscribed “JULY IV MDCCLXXVI” (July 4, 1776), the date of the American Declaration of Independence.
